Desegregation court cases and school demographic data

From this page you can download the elementary school data from the National Center for Educational Statistics that were used to prepare these pages.

There are two things to keep in mind when using these data:

Option 1 - Download the 'metropolitan area elementary school data' file
This file contains information for all elementary schools in metropolitan areas for 1968-1971, 1980, 1989-1990 , 1999-2000 and 2010. To download the metro school data set click here.

Option 2 - Download the 'central city elementary school data' file
This file contains information for all elementary schools located in central cities of metropolitan areas for 1989-1990, 1999-2000, and 2009-2010. Prior to 1989 we have not been able to separate city and suburban schools. To download the central city school data set click here.

Option 3 - Download the 'suburban elementary school data' file
This file contains information for all elementary schools located in suburbs of metropolitan areas for 1989-1990, 1999-2000, and 2009-2010. Prior to 1989 we have not been able to separate city and suburban schools. To download the suburban school data set click here.

Option 4 - Download the 'school districts data' file
This file contains information for elementary schools by school districts for 1968-70, 1980-82, 1989-1990 , 1999-2000 and 2009-2010. Districts with very small elementary enrollments, few minorities, or few elementary schools are included, but dissimilarity measures are not meaningful for them and should be used with caution. To download the school district data set as an Excel spreadsheet click here. To download as an SPSS file with variable labels, click here .

Option 5 - Download test score data for all schools, 2004
These files contain the available school-level data for math and reading scores in various grade levels from elementary to high school. These are the scores on which the "quality" of schools is based in the U.S. Schools map system. The percentile rankings take the raw scores for each school and convert them into a percentile within their state.

Desegregation case data: You may also download a spreadsheet that lists court cases and HEW actions regarding desegregation, listed separately by school district. You have the option of selecting all cases or cases in a single state. Because this data file represents a large investment of effort, you will be asked to agree to cite the American Communities Project, Brown University as the source of data in any publication or report using this information; not to use the information for a commercial purpose; and not to re-distribute the data file independently.
