William Ferron was born in North Carolina to native North Carolinian parents. In 1900, he lived as a boarder with his two sisters, was employed as a day laborer, and attended school. In 1920, 40-year old William was married, though his wife was not living with him. Working as a porter, he was living as a boarder at 68-70 W. 139th St. in Manhattan, one of the most congested ghettoes in the nation.
