Benjamin Rhodes was born in New York City in 1863 to U.S. born parents—his mother and father were born in Massachusetts and New York, respectively. Working as a coffee broker in1900, Benjamin, his wife Lillian, and their four children rented a home at 202 W. 74th St. in Manhattan. The family residence and composition had not changed in 1920, indicating a sense of stability that many Americans were in search of, and 56-year old Benjamin was working at a better paying job as a manager and official. At this time, his children were grown and living at home. His two sons helped support the family, and were employed in the same line of work as their father.
